Christopher J. Mutimer
Partner
Christopher J. Mutimer is a partner at Monument Legal and a founding member of the firm. He focuses his practice on federal and local criminal defense and personal injury litigation in Washington, D.C. Mr. Mutimer has more than two decades of experience in the District and holds an “AV Preeminent” peer-reviewed rating from Martindale-Hubbell, the highest recognition awarded to attorneys for legal ability and professional ethics.
Criminal Defense Practice
Mr. Mutimer’s criminal defense practice encompasses a broad range of federal and DC Superior Court matters, including white collar offenses such as wire fraud, bank fraud, and money laundering, as well as federal sex offenses, violent crimes, domestic violence, firearms offenses, drug crimes, and DUI. He has represented clients at every stage of the criminal process, from grand jury proceedings and pre-indictment investigations through trial and appeal. In federal court, his practice reflects a thorough command of federal procedure, evidentiary standards, and sentencing guidelines. He has represented individuals holding the nation’s highest security clearances and has appeared on behalf of members of the United States armed forces.
Complex & High-Stakes Matters
Mr. Mutimer is frequently engaged by clients and referring attorneys in complex, high-stakes matters, including those involving negotiation with the United States Attorney’s Office, the DC Office of the Attorney General, and counsel from some of the nation’s largest law firms. His civil practice includes the representation of plaintiffs in serious personal injury matters and the defense of clients in civil litigation proceedings.
Career Background
Prior to co-founding Monument Legal in 2024, Mr. Mutimer was a partner at a prominent Washington, D.C. criminal defense firm, where he practiced for more than eight years and contributed to the significant growth of that firm’s regional presence. Since the founding of Monument Legal, he has built the firm’s Washington, D.C. criminal defense practice into one of the most active and well-regarded in the District.
Recognition & Teaching
Mr. Mutimer is a 2017 graduate of the Trial Lawyers College in Wyoming, founded by noted trial lawyer Gerry Spence. He teaches an annual course on domestic violence at the George Washington University School of Law and leads an annual seminar for the DC Bar on criminal practice in DC Superior Court. He has been recognized by Super Lawyers Magazine, the National Trial Lawyers, and Best Lawyers, and has been quoted in The Washington Post, The Washingtonian, and other publications.
