Steven J. Ogilvie, Partner

Steven J. Ogilvie is a seasoned criminal defense attorney with over 17 years of litigation experience and a deep focus on complex and high-stakes civil and criminal cases. He earned his Juris Doctor from Wayne State University Law School in 2008, graduating cum laude. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Michigan State University, where he graduated with High Honors in 2005.

Criminal Defense & Trial Experience

Steven has built his practice around criminal defense and civil litigation, managing over 1,000 cases with more than 100 jury trials across civil, criminal, and business matters. His criminal defense work encompasses the most serious charges, including first-degree murder, conspiracy, and violent felony offenses. In the white-collar arena, he has defended clients against Medicare and Medicaid fraud allegations exceeding $500 million. His diverse case portfolio also includes constitutional litigation, employment discrimination claims, and complex civil defense work.

Federal & Multi-Jurisdictional Practice

Steven maintains an active federal practice that spans multiple jurisdictions. Beyond his substantial work in D.C. Superior Court, his federal representations have included a $160 million narcotics trafficking prosecution in the Southern District of New York, a $46 million tax evasion and mail fraud case in the Northern District of Illinois, and intellectual property litigation in California, demonstrating his ability to handle high-stakes matters across the country.

Corporate Counsel & Transactional Work

In addition to his litigation practice, Steven provides general counsel services to business clients, advising on financial transactions, mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructuring, and regulatory compliance matters.

Approach to Practice

Steven is recognized for his strategic trial methodology, thorough case preparation, and unwavering dedication to protecting the constitutional rights of every client he represents.

Homicide Defense Experience

Steven has extensive experience defending clients in some of the District of Columbia’s most complex and high-profile homicide prosecutions. His trial work includes representation in cases arising from the widely publicized Kennedy Street mass shooting, the Wellington Park homicides involving the tragic death of 10-year-old Makiyah Wilson, and other serious violent crime matters that have drawn significant media attention and public scrutiny. These cases have required skilled navigation of multi-defendant trials, voluminous discovery, competing eyewitness testimony, forensic and ballistic evidence, cell-site location data, surveillance footage, DNA analysis, and cooperating witness accounts.

Throughout these challenging prosecutions, Steven has focused on individualized culpability assessment, rigorous examination of evidentiary reliability, and constitutional protections requiring proof beyond a reasonable doubt. His defense approach emphasizes critical analysis of the government’s case theory, strategic cross-examination of forensic testimony, challenges to identification and association evidence, and assertive advocacy to ensure fair treatment even in emotionally charged cases involving tragic loss of life. This experience reflects his commitment to providing principled, vigorous defense representation in the most demanding courtroom settings where stakes are highest and constitutional safeguards matter most.
